PlanetCon: January 2019

 The 3rd PlanetCon event was held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Quatama Elementary School in Hillsboro, OR. In addition to recycling, there was a winter holiday décor swap, repair fair, and winter coat donation. In addition, information tables were available on a number of topics related to sustainable living and local resources.
Many Thanks to the groups that helped this event happen:
  • Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling for funding the plastic recycling transportation and other resources. And Heather and other personnel for their time and expertise.
  • Quatama Elementary & Hillsboro School District for providing the venue, and teacher Sheila for her great support before and during the event.
  • Clyde from 350 Washington County for providing battery transportation to Metro Transfer Station 
  • Winco for accepting the plastic film 
  • Denton Plastics for accepting the rigid plastics and Mark for his plastic expertise
  • Agilyx for accepting the #6 expanded polystyrene foam (aka styrofoam) and John for his support
  • ​Computer Drive Connection in Cornelius for accepting the computers and electronics
  • The dozens of volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the event
  • New Seasons Orenco Station for donating coffee and snacks for the volunteers
  • Stringride and Trent Toney for providing wonderful music
  • La Vida Veggie restaurant for being there to sell their delicious vegan food

At least 450 cars and well over 500 people attended and dropped off recycling throughout the 3 hour event. Below is the collection summary.
  • about 160 yards of polystyrene foam (styrofoam) were recycled at Agilyx in Tigard
  • 965.1 pounds of plastic bags & film were recycled for Trex Decking products
  • 2238.5 pounds of household batteries 
  • over 1000 pounds of rigid plastics (#2, 4, 5, 6) were recycled at Denton plastics in east Portland
  • 6,982 pounds of electronics, small appliances, and non-working holiday lights were collected 
  • 146 swappers enjoyed the Winter Holiday Décor Swap. Items from the swap which were not picked up by the end of the event were donated to Goodwill
  • 27 large bags of donated warm winter clothing was given to Family Promise to give to those in need
  • 32 people brought 50 items for repair at the Repair Fair, enabling these items to continue to be useful
