Recycle
Recycle Polystyrene Foam (often called Styrofoam®) - Look for resin code #6. This includes block foam, packing foam, foam clamshells, foam coolers, egg cartons, coffee cups and foam meat trays of any color.
  • Items must be clean and dry with no food residue.
  • Separate packing peanuts from the rest of the foam in a plastic bag or other container.
  • Other polystyrene items accepted include CD jewel and cassette tape cases (remove the CDs and tapes), plastic cutlery, and broken plastic hangers. These will likely not be marked with #6 resin code, but they may be marked as PS-6. Separate these items from the foam items.
  • Crinkly plastic planter pots that are clearly marked #6 or PS will be accepted. Remove all soil and dirt residue and place with other #6 non-foam items.
  • Did you know?  Polystyrene can be recycled into new products. A 24 hour drop-off box for polystyrene is at Agilyx in Tigard. Some mail stores can reuse your plastic bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts.

Rigid Plastics:  Plastic caps, lids, Containers, Beverage Handles, Outdoor Furniture, Nursery Plant Pots and Trays

Rigid plastic must be CLEAN, DRY, SORTED, and FREE OF LABELS, FOIL and METAL

We will accept the following rigid plastic:
  • Threaded plastic caps from bottles, jugs, and jars. There should be no food residue or mold and remove any paper/metal inserts from inside the cap if possible. It is not necessary to have a resin code on the threaded plastic caps. Examples: plastic caps from household containers such as detergent jugs, food bottles and jars, milk jugs, drink containers, shampoo and medicine bottles.

  • Plastic containers, lids, and beverage handles with resin codes #2, #4, #5 or #6.  Wash the items well and remove any adhesive labels (adding very warm water to containers for several minutes helps melt the adhesive). Important Note: Your mixed recycling bin at home allows plastic bottles, tubs and jugs over 6 fluid ounces, rigid plastic buckets less than 5 gallons and pots over 4 inches, so there is no need to bring what can be recycled at home.  Examples of what to bring: lids from tubs (eg dairy products) and coffee cup lids. Plastic containers including medicine bottles of any size, drink cups, take-out containers, trays, and bowls.
  • Rigid nursery plant pots with the resin codes #2, #4, #5, #6. Remove all soil and labels and wash well. If there is no resin code then do not bring to PlanetCon.
  • Plastic lawn furniture: tables and chairs.  Wash the items well and remove all dirt and glued labels.  There will likely not be a resin code.
  • All plastic must be washed well and must be free of adhesive labels (small residual from glued labels are OK).  Scrape off any glued foil. Cut off any glued film (such as on tofu containers). Sort and separate plastic items according to type:  #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE, #5 PP, #6 PS, and threaded plastic caps.
  • NOT ACCEPTED:  NO #1 PETE plastic, NO #3 or #7 plastic, NO plastic toys, NO containers missing resin codes #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE, #5 PP or #6 PS.

REDUCE

Reduce your consumption of nature's resources as much as possible. For example, reduce car trips by biking, taking public transportation or consolidating trips. Take shorter showers. Lower the heat and put on a sweater. Replace your lawn with low-water-use native plants. Buy products that have minimum packaging. Cook at home more often and reduce fast-food and take-out which uses disposable items. Buy food in bulk and bring your own containers. Make your own cleaners instead of expensive cleaners with chemicals. Give gifts of experiences not just more "stuff".
REFUSE unnecessary items including plastic straws, free junky items at events, paper napkins, and extra single servings of condiments (ketchup, hot sauce).

Picture
REUSE

Buy reusable products. Begin with a reusable water bottle and drink cup instead of buying beverages in single-use, disposable cups. Take reusable bags to the grocery store, including produce bags. Rent or borrow tools and items that you won't use frequently. The local libraries are wonderful sources of everything from books to movies, games, music, and more. Buy used items at thrift stores and garage sales instead of buying new. Participate in swap events.  Use cloth napkins, towels, and tissues at home to replace paper products.
REPAIR items that break: Metro area Repair Fairs help fix broken items at no charge.
Picture
RECYCLE

When items aren't reusable, try to recycle them.  Glass, clean paper products, metal cans and plastic tubs, jugs and bottles can be put in curbside containers at single-family residences. What can't be recycled curbside can often be recycled at other places. Far West Recycling takes everything from cooking oil to electronics. Use a worm or compost bin to turn food scraps into rich, natural fertilizer for your garden.
